Tournament Recap

A Champion Built for Chaos

It was the kind of Sunday the Texas Open is known for — wet fairways, suspended play, and a leaderboard that kept flipping right up until the final putt dropped. When it was all over, J.J. Spaun was the one holding the trophy.

Spaun, the reigning U.S. Open champion and No. 13 in the world, had struggled through his 2025–26 season opener. Seven starts, three missed cuts, a best finish of T24 at The Players. Nothing about his form suggested he'd be the last man standing on a soggy Sunday in San Antonio. But golf has a way of humbling expectations — and Spaun has a habit of rising to the moment.

He closed with a 5-under 67, playing his final 27 holes at 9-under par in brutal conditions, to finish at 17-under 271 and claim a one-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre, Matt Wallace, and Michael Kim.

How Sunday Unfolded

Key Moment 1 · Rain Delay Chaos

30 Holes in a Day

Saturday's third round was suspended due to severe storms, leaving most of the field with 12–18 holes unplayed. MacIntyre finished his third round Sunday morning in even-par 72, maintaining a one-shot lead entering the final 18. The grueling 30-hole Sunday separated the mentally tough from the rest — and Spaun thrived.

Key Moment 2 · Hole 16 & 17

Birdie-Eagle. That's How You Win.

Trailing in the final round, Spaun drained a birdie on the par-3 16th, then drove the green on the short par-4 17th and converted the eagle putt to suddenly seize the clubhouse lead at 17-under. The two-hole surge — played in tough, wet conditions — was as clutch as it gets on the PGA Tour.

Key Moment 3 · MacIntyre's 18th

The Scot's Heartbreaker

MacIntyre, who had led for most of the week, pulled his approach on the 609-yard par-5 18th into thick mud near a concession area. After getting relief from temporary immovable obstructions, he could only wedge to 30 feet. His birdie putt to force a playoff came up short — giving Spaun the win by one.

This game is so crazy. I haven't been feeling at the form I wanted to be, and just trying to take each day as it comes and accept what I have.

What's Next

Augusta Awaits — Now With Momentum

Spaun heads to Augusta National as one of the hottest players in the field. Unlike four years ago when this very win got him into the Masters for the first time, he arrives now as the reigning U.S. Open champion — already exempt, already a known commodity at the highest level.

The bigger story is confidence. Spaun entered this week having missed the cut in four of seven starts, his best result a T24 at The Players. The mental grind of defending a major without results to show for it is real. A win — especially in conditions this brutal — is exactly the reset a champion needs.

For Ludvig Åberg, a T5 here gives him three consecutive top-10s heading into his Masters debut as a legitimate contender. For MacIntyre, the heartbreak of 18 will sting — but he led for most of the week and showed the form of a player who will win again soon.

There's just so much that comes with winning big events like a U.S. Open or any major. I put a lot of pressure on myself to start the year. Sticking to the right mantra has really helped me.

— J.J. Spaun, post-round press conference

J.J. Spaun didn't just win a golf tournament Sunday. He answered a question that's been hanging over his season since the confetti fell at his U.S. Open victory. He can still win. He can still close. And he's going to Augusta National next week with something far more valuable than an exempt spot — he's going with momentum.
